Pakistan: Government and University of Agriculture announce partnership on water management

Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Agriculture Faisalabad to work together to support research and training activities leading to sustainable development and management of water resources for the agriculture sector in Pakistan. WAPDA Chairman Zafar Mahmood said that 90 percent of water in Pakistan is used by the agriculture sector hence there is a dire need to focus on water conservation by introducing the latest irrigation techniques instead of relying on flood irrigation. This will not only help check wastage of water but also enhance productivity. The chairman added that the pricing of water is the key to maintaining a balance between demand and supply particularly in the agriculture sector.
