Dow delivers components for a multi-technology water demineralisation unit

Dow Water & Process Solutions, a global leader in sustainable water separation and purification technologies and a global business unit of DowDuPont Specialty Products Division, has agreed to a partnership with the leading Italian EPC company, Bernardinello Engineering S.p.A., to design an ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (RO) multi-technology installation for a new water demineralisation plant at ENI Power in Brindisi, Italy.

The new installation with a capacity of 6,700m3/day is expected to start operation in June 2018 and will deliver high quality boiler feed water to ENI’s power plant, which produces electricity for the petrochemical complex in Brindisi, Italy. The system will be built and then operated by Bernardinello Engineering S.p.A.

The system will include DOW IntegraFluxTM ultrafiltration modules with XP fiber, featuring high productivity, high mechanical strength, hollow-fiber polyvinylidene fluoride membranes that combine excellent performance and industry leading membrane area with low energy and low chemical consumption.

Ultrafiltration will serve as the pre-treatment for the reverse osmosis installation. The RO unit includes DOW FILMTECTM SWRO and BWRO membranes, which provide consistently high performance and enhanced element life, hence enabling lower energy usage and reduced total cost of ownership.

“We are pleased to continue our long partnership with Bernardinello for this project and to make a clear impact to our customer and end-user alike by bringing the latest water treatment technologies into this new installation,” said Kevin Reyntjens, Commercial Director for Western Europe for Dow Water & Process Solutions. “This new installation is a good example of how a multi-technology approach to water treatment is key to make the most of the available resources and how this helps companies to become more sustainable by increasing energy efficiency and economic savings”.

The agreement was forged at Aquatech Amsterdam, where Dow Water & Process Solutions was Principal Sponsor and Bernardinello Engineering S.p.A. was present as exhibitor. Under the theme of “where the solution is clear,” the company presented the Water Application Value Engine (WAVE), a free software tool which enables engineers globally to design differentiated and optimised solutions as fast and as accurately as needed. Furthermore, Dow organised a series of informative sessions where the company’s experts discussed some of the latest trends in the sector such as the Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) that radically reduces recovery costs or even turns wastewater into product streams, enabling reuse.
