International: SIWI campaign elects ‘Going vegan’ as Best Water Idea

‘Going Vegan’ has won the Best Water Ideas campaign, organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). SIWI ran an online campaign encouraging people to vote for their favourite water saving idea and ‘Going Vegan’ received 58 percent of a total 2,730 votes cast. The ten most popular ideas running in the final stage were: rainwater harvesting, going vegan, UN resolution, the tap, the water-less toilet, sari as water purifier, from drain to drink, the well, desalination, and dams. Meat production is relatively water intense compared to producing other crops. It requires 15,500 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef compared to 180 litres for 1 kilogram of tomatoes and 250 litres for 1 kilogram of potatoes.
